Anna Hassenzahl is a counselor in supervision working towards licensure. Through her own counseling journey, Anna knows it takes a lot of courage to trust a therapist and explore one’s own story. She has experienced deep healing and restoration through the counseling process herself.

Anna believes that compassion is at the heart of healing and that transformation begins to take place when we experience the compassion of another in the darkest parts of our stories. Regardless of the issue one wishes to explore in counseling, Anna is committed to creating an environment where clients are safe, supported, and nurtured as they experience growth.

In her own life, Anna has spent time answering the question of her identity, “Who does God say that I am?” In finding the answer to that question she has been able to connect what she has known to be true in her mind to truth that she experiences in her heart. Anna has seen God fulfilling His promise to make all things new, including redeeming the hardest parts of her own story. She believes there is hope and redemption in even the most painful and shameful parts of our stories.

Anna enjoys working with individuals, both women and men (including adolescents), couples, and families from all backgrounds. Her approach to counseling is relational in style and focused on the whole person, working from both a biblical framework and a clinical approach. Her areas of focus are anxiety and depression, PTSD, issues related to sex and sexuality, parenting, marriage, relational and childhood trauma, abuse, shame, guilt, cross-cultural transitions, grief and loss including infertility and infant loss, issues of faith and toxic faith recovery, vocational calling, and missionary care.

Individualizing each session to the needs of the client, Anna works from attachment science and trauma-informed perspectives implementing a variety of therapeutic modalities such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT), and Sand Tray Therapy. Anna is trained and certified in the Prepare-Enrich premarital and marriage assessment.  She is also certified in a number of career and personality assessments helping clients identify their strengths and uncover their unique giftings.

Even though Anna has spent much of her time in the Midwest, she has experienced the joys and struggles of transition. After having only lived in Indiana and being a stay-at-home mom for years, she and her family moved to West Asia where they served as missionaries before being brought to Orlando, Florida. Anna received her Master of Arts in Counseling degree from Reformed Theological Seminary while in Orlando before relocating to Knoxville.

Anna enjoys being in nature with her husband, their 3 teenage kids, and their mini golden doodle, Cassi. When she’s not outdoors you can find her studying a book, knee-deep in a DIY project, trying a new recipe, or exploring all that Knoxville has to offer.
